This is a personal opinion and possible conspiracy theory. Yesterday afternoon, anti-Occupy Central activists made a violent move against the peaceful, pro-democracy protesters. Unlike the Occupy Central movement which was spontaneous, this anti-Occupy Central movement appeared to have been planned in advance. As of now, 1:30AM, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (that's a live stream of the action), although not as extensively as a few days ago with tear gas and pepper spray. Rather, it's more small fights and destruction.
(Pictured: an anti-Occupy Central protester engaging in a shouting match with Occupy Central protesters.)
Now for the conspiracy theory. I believe this was planned because it of the nature the anti-Occupy Central activists conducted their movements. It occurred in two different places at the same time - Admiralty and Mong Kok, both of which are separated by about a mile of harbour. They appeared from nowhere and struck with the element of surprise. A number of people that instigated the attack were disguised with masks, but the majority of them were also seen to have tattoos, the mark of a triad/mafia member. My father who has encountered these kind of people before says he's positive they are triad members, judging by the way they hold themselves and conduct their activities. From there on, more anti-Occupy Central activists joined the action.
(Pictured: another anti-Occupy Central protester with a megaphone, telling "you can't stop our children from going to school")
Now on to the nitty gritty of the conspiracy - some are believing that this was organised by the government. How, you ask, can the triads work with the government? The answer is through the CID (Criminal Investigation Department). In order to conduct their investigations, CID agents need informants and sources of information. The triads are one of them and are often used because the triads are the hub of Hong Kong criminal activity. It's a corrupt practice to collaborate with the triads, but it's done. Through this, the government are able to manipulate the triads and utilise them to disrupt the Occupy Central activities.
Now that attacks have been conducted, the Occupy Central with Love and Peace protesters have this to say:
HKFS, Scholarism and OCLP say that if the government does not immediately prevent the organised attacks on supporters of the Occupy movement, the students will call off dialogue on political reform with the government.
Of course, my opinion is only a personal point of view and should not be taken as a completely reliable source, but what I am 100% sure of is that the initial attacks were planned. Two attacks involving similar people at the same time can't be coincidence.
The tension now is so high, you could cut it with a knife. I'm trying to keep an objective, balanced view on things, so perhaps in a few days, I'll attempt to present an pro-Beijing objective for you guys to evaluate. But for now, the rest of Hong Kong and myself will hold on tight. It's going to be a bumpy ride.

No tanks? China's getting soft.

Hong Kong's PLA garrison has no tanks - just APCs. The best it's got is 21 WZ551s, armoured with 12.7 mm machine guns to water cannons. But there's no saying that they won't send any more equipment over from the border.

Very conspiracy-y.
These counter protests always pop up and regularly get violent. They're typically normal people who are sick and tired of not being able to get to work/home normally, having their business drop due to customers not wanting to wander into a protest zone where they're based, or are just sick and tired of the whole atmosphere and would rather things return to the status quo.
I'm bettin that's more likely.

True, but considering the mess of corruption up in China at present, I wouldn't be surprised if any of this actually happened.

Oh yeah, this brings back some memories from the 2013 protests here in Brazil... Your theory isn't far fetched at all, because that's essentially what happened here. Peaceful protests were shaken up by groups of Black Blocs, who, despite claiming to be anti government, started stirring as much crap as possible. Confrontations with the police ensued and, soon enough, no one wanted to get involved in the protests anymore, peaceful or otherwise. As soon as the movement died down, the Black Blocs vanished. Several reports have come along in the last year, identifying the leaders of the Black Bloc movement as people with ties to the Worker's Party, such as ex convicts, personal bodyguards and employees of lower ranking officers, militants of the MST movement... So there's a thoery going round that the Blac Blocs were actually backed by the government to create enough tension with the authorities that they would fight back, suppressing peaceful protests as well, and it worked like a charm...
